Obituary for Oather Leroy Jackson

Oather Leroy Jackson
Oather “Leroy” Jackson, 84, died Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at Missouri Baptist Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

Leroy was born on September 27, 1933 in Reynolds County, Missouri, son of the late Oather and Gertrude (Pulley) Jackson. He was the youngest of nine children and became the first Jackson to graduate from high school.

In 1952, Leroy married Mona Jane (Mann) Jackson. The young couple moved to St. Louis and gave birth to their only child, Michael Lee Jackson, on May 27, 1953.

Leroy worked for General Motors from 1953 to 1982 before retiring to Reynolds County.

He loved to entertain and never sat still, constantly fixing, rebuilding, and inventing countless things around the house, but mostly for other family and friends.

He was one of the first customers of IMO’s pizza when they opened their first store in his neighborhood in 1964, and one of his last meals was sharing his favorite mushroom and sausage IMO’s pizza with his family while in the hospital.
After Mona passed away in 2000, Leroy married Rosemary (Smith) Jackson, who died shortly after in 2003.

In 2003, Leroy moved to Ava, IL and married Ethel (Wilson) Jackson. The two traveled frequently and went on several cruises together before her death in 2014.

Leroy lived a mile from his son in Wayne County, Missouri for the last few years of his life. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and spent every minute he could out in his garden, fishing with family and friends, cooking chicken and dumplings, and enjoying a cold Michelob while watching the St. Louis Cardinals.
He was an active member of every community he ever lived in, some of which include serving as a Scoutmaster and Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America, Board of Directors for Reynolds County Memorial Hospital, Board of Directors for Reynolds County Ambulance Board, a volunteer firefighter, and a member of the Lions Club.

Leroy leaves his son, Michael (Janet) Jackson of Patterson, MO; Grandchildren Daniel (Kristen) Jackson of Columbia, MO, Jennifer (Terry) Yocham, and David
(Claire) Jackson of Lake St. Louis, MO; Step Grandchildren, Eric (Laura) Woods of St. Louis, MO, Jennifer(Bill) Edmonds of Ashville, NC; Great Grandchildren William and Benjamin Jackson of Columbia, MO; Foster Children Mary Batson Bagby of Manchester, MO and Harold Batson of Arnold, MO; Foster Grandchildren Nicole Jones Blackwell and Tom Jones; Step Grandchildren, Beatrix and Wren Woods,  Sister Imogene Landers of Salem, MO; dozens of nieces and nephews, and countless friends he made everywhere he went. In addition to his parents and spouses he was preceded in death by seven siblings, Thomas "Tommy" Jackson, John "Johnny" Jackson, Delbert Jackson, Paul Jackson, Myrl Creemens, Eileen Santhuff and Beulah Jackson.
The visitation was held on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 from 5:00PM to 8:00PM, at Ruegg Funeral Home, Piedmont, MO, and the funeral was held at 10:00AM on Wednesday, January 3, 2018. Pastor Tadd Kruithoff ministered to the family. Special memories were given by his grandchildren, Dr. Daniel Jackson, David Jackson, Jennifer Yocham and great-grandchild William Jackson. Burial was at Centerville Cemetery, Centerville, MO. Dr. Daniel Jackson, David Jackson, Kenny Jackson, Terry Yocham, Gary Volz and Logan Clay served as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, Piedmont, MO. Online condolences can be made at www.rueggfuneralhomes.com
