Robert “Leon” Wood, 89, of Greenville, MO, passed away Monday, April 22, 2024, at Bethesda Meadow Nursing Center, Ellisville, MO. He was born in Taskee, MO, September 5, 1934, to parents Clarence Wood and Dessie (Boyer) Wood.
Leon was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Leon proudly served in the United States Army. After he was honorably discharged, he returned home and married the love of his life, Shirley Mae Willard on August 20, 1960, and they were blessed with two children. He was a Dock Hand at OK Trucking company in St. Louis for thirty-two years. He was a trustee of Rucker Cemetery for forty-five years. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, boating, and riding his 4-wheeler and his side-by-side. He was an avid Cardinals baseball fan and never missed a game. Leon was a strong man, aways positive and never complained. He was a Wayne County original, quick to lend a helping hand and assure everyone that tomorrow would be a better day. Leon loved his family and spending time visiting with family and friends. Leon was a friend to many.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of sixty-one years; brothers: Eugene, Albert, Edmond, Ira, and Bobby Lee Wood; sister Janey Young; brother-in-law: Larry Willard.
Leon is survived by his children: Connie Gasko and husband Bob of St. Louis, Steve Wood and wife Pamela of O’Fallon, MO; grandchild: Dustin Wood; great-grandchild: Greyson Wood; great-step grandchildren: Devin and Lily Arias; brothers: Vernon Wood and wife Mary Jane of St. Louis, MO; sister: Judy Jones and husband Floyd of Poplar Bluff; brothers-in-law: Jerry Willard, Bob Willard and wife Kathy, Bill Willard, Harold Willard and wife Priscilla; sisters-in-law: Yvonne Wood of Greenville, Bonnie Barnes and husband Charles, and Peggy Willard. Leon will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Visitation was held 5:00 pm, Friday, April 26, 2024, at Ruegg Funeral Home, Greenville Chapel. Funeral service was held at 10:00 am, Saturday, April 27, 2024, also in the Greenville Chapel. Pastor Wendell Sapp ministered to the family. Dustin Wood, Devin Arias, Todd Wood, Clyton Wood, Junior Wood, and Michael Willard served as pallbearers. Burial followed in Rucker Cemetery, Williamsville, with full military honors provided by the United States Army and American Legion Post 281 of Piedmont.
