Obituary

Wanda Jean Cheney, age 87, of St. Louis Missouri passed away on June 9, 2019 at Delmar Gardens on the Green Nursing Home in St. Louis, Missouri. Although her legal first name was Wanda she always preferred to go by the name of "Jean". Jean was born on October 20, 1931 to Clarence Oran Ward and Ruby Gladys Ward in Clubb, Missouri. Jean was raised by her parents with her two younger brothers, Harold and Milburn in Wayne County and successfully graduated from high school in 1950. She then moved to St. Louis where she met her future husband, James Robert Cheney, whom she married on September 6, 1952. He shipped out to Korea seven days later. When he returned in 1953, Jean and Jim temporarily moved to Colorado Springs and returned to settle in St. Louis in 1954. Jean worked with her husband in a printing business and started a family in 1958. Four daughters were born; Desiree J. Cheney of Ballwin, Missouri, Michele R. Cheney of Maryland, Natalie A. Cheney of Ballwin, Missouri, and Valerie J. Cheney of Piedmont, Missouri. Jean and Jim bought a farm near Piedmont Missouri and moved the family there by August 1972. After raising a family, Jean worked for a while as a nurse's aide. Eventually she blended her love of crafting and antiquities by setting up her own business as the proprietor of a Flea Market stationed along Highway 34 Near Piedmont, Missouri. James preceded Jean in her death on March 14, 2001. Jean then moved back to St. Louis to live with her daughter in 2006. Jean is survived by her four daughters and three grandchildren and their families, her brothers Harold Ward, and Milburn Ward and families. A visitation and memorial will be held at Ruegg Funeral Home, Piedmont, Missouri, Friday, June 14, 2019 from 4-6 pm. A cremation is planned to occur in St. Louis, Missouri afterwards. Online condolences can be made at www.rueggfuneralhomes.com

Loretta A Wedepohl

Posted at 06:30pm
Hello to all of Jean's family. Not sure if you all remember or not, but I am an old friend of Jean's of Jean's - since we all went to grade school, high school, marriages and beyond. We kept in touch for some time after that, but I had not been able to reach her these past few years. I am Loretta (nee Haggett) Wedepohl, and I do offer you all my sincere condolences. I loved Jean as a young child, and on as a high school friend, through both of our marriages, and beyond when her husband had passed, and after she had moved to St. Louis to live with one if her daughter's. I still have a letter that she wrote to me from her daughter's house. She was like a "sister" to me that I never had. I had not been in touch with her recently, and very sorry that I had not been. May God give you all blessings and ease, and peace at this time. Most sincerely, Loretta Wedepohl.
