Obituary for Helen R. Castile (Borders)

Helen R. Castile, 89, of Piedmont, MO, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2019, at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness. She was born on August 13, 1929, to Walter and Etta (Lloyd) Borders in Des Arc, MO. Helen spent her early life in Des Arc before moving with her parents to California, where they found work. Adult years were spent in St. Louis, MO, where Helen and her husband, Arthur “Red,” made a home and raised six girls. Helen stayed busy as a homemaker throughout those years. During her retirement years, she moved to Piedmont and became an active member of Victory Baptist Church and nurtured her grandchildren. After Red died in 2003, she adjusted to single life again, with her family playing a major role in her life. On July 19, 2006, she married Louis Vavak and he also preceded her in death. Helen was a loving mother and grandmother, blessed with four generations. She was a constant and concerned matriarch. She often would pray for her family and try to encourage them through good times and bad. Helen was also a great friend, listening and not passing judgement on life’s challenging problems, a great cook, a person with a mischievous and fun spirit. In her younger years, she enjoyed singing with the Jackson sisters. Helen will be greatly missed. She is survived by her six daughters, Marilyn Nelson and husband, Mike, of Fredericktown, MO; Linda Palmer of Piedmont; Joyce Tucker of Piedmont; Peggy Cassaday and husband, Mike, of Lee’s Summit, MO; Lori Tucker and husband, James, of Piedmont; Cynthia Arent and husband, Chaz, of Boston, Virginia; twenty grandchildren, and many great, great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by brothers: Albert Borders, Norman Borders and Bill Borders; and sisters, Alice Bearce, Betty Ashbaugh and Lula Radford. Visitation was at 11:00 am, Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Ruegg Funeral Home, Piedmont, MO. Funeral services followed at 1:00 pm also at the Piedmont chapel. Pastor John Radford ministered to the family. Mike Cassaday, Mike Nelson, Zach Parish, Jared Monson, James Tucker, Jordan Richardson, Joe Galati and Brandon Galati served as pallbearers. Lance Ray served as honorary pallbearer. Burial was at Annapolis cemetery. Online condolences can be made at www.rueggfuneralhomes.com
