Clara Boatwright (Silvy)
Clara Boatwright, 104, passed away Sunday, January 14, 2018, at her daughter’s residence in Florissant, MO.
Clara was a long time resident of Wayne County, MO, and had deep family roots in Iron County. Born September 17, 1913 to parents Edward and Pearl (Laxton) Silvy at Mill Spring, MO, she was one of their eleven children.
She was raised in the Des Arc area through the 1910s and 1920s, attending school there and receiving Christ as her Savior. She was baptized in Big Creek on a day close to her eighteenth birthday. She married Thelmer Boatwright on September 5, 1931, in Des Arc and to this union, two children were born. With a spirit of adventure, the couple set out to California to find work and a new life in Orville. After six years, Clara’s mother suffered severe injury in a house fire and Clara decided to return to care for her. When Pearl was in better health, Clara and family moved to the St. Louis metro area for their working years. Clara found work at an ammunition factory where she became a bullet inspector and was one of the original Rosie the Riveter’s during the second World War. Even with work in St. Louis, the love of country life and family persuaded them to purchase a farm near Camp Creek in Wayne County. Throughout the years, they split time between the farm and the city. In retirement years, Thelmer and Clara returned to Des Arc until his death in 1989. Clara stayed with her son Charles Ottis Sr, until he became ill and later returned to Florissant to spend her final years with her daughter and great-granddaughter.
In her younger years, she loved the outdoors and working in her garden. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed being around children.
She is survived by a daughter, Helen Louise Wakefield of Florissant, MO; grandchildren, Carolyn Boatwright and Charles Ottis Boatwright Jr.; brother, Bobby Silvy of Des Arc, MO; and many grand, great-grand, great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son Charles Ottis Boatwright SR.; grandchildren, Charles Lee Wakefield, Ronald Eugene Wakefield, Debra Louise Wakefield, Reba Loretta Battles; nine brothers and sisters, Harry Silvy, Leonard Silvy, Claude Silvy, Ray Silvy, Floyd Silvy, Chester Silvy, George Silvy, Pauline Copeland, and Willard Silvy.
